报告人简介:

Dr. Kegang Wang, Professor, joined in Mechanical & Aerospace Department, Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) from 2012. From 2006 to 2011, he was Associate Professor in Physics and Space Sciences Department, FIT. From 1999 to 2006, he was Research Assistant Professor/Visiting Scholar, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, New York. Before he moved to RPI, he held Associate Professor position in Beijing Institute of Technology, China. He received his Ph.D. from Chinese Academy of Sciences, China.

Professor Wang’s research covers theoretical, computational and experimental materials science and engineering and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. He developed several fundamental theories and computer simulation techniques, e.g. diffusion screening theory, stochastic theory, united theory and multiparticle diffusion simulations for phase coarsening with his collaborators, and statistical mechanics of anomalous diffusion. His research was funded by National Science Foundation and NASA in the US, Ministry of Education of China, China Postdoctoral Foundation, and Ministry of Education and Technology of Spain. His research is world-wide cited. In the field of statistical mechanics, he developed generalized Langevin method, generalized Fokker-Planck method, and method of continuous time random walk for anomalous diffusion with his collaborators. His theories in anomalous diffusion are widely applied to explain experimental results in intracellular transport and cell migration and to other complex systems. He authored and coauthored two book chapters and about 63 refereed journal papers. He delivered over 49 colloquia in universities, research institutes, and industries, and invited conference presentations and about 50 contributed conference talks.

报告摘要:

Advance in Phase Coarsening

Kegang Wang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department

Florida Institute of Technology

Phase coarsening (Ostwald ripening) is a ubiquitous phenomenon occurring in the field of chemistry, physics, materials science, geology, and economics. The advance over the past fifty years in theoretical, computational, and experimental studies of phase coarsening will be discussed. Modeling and simulation play an increasingly important role in many applications such as improvement of trial and error methods in material design. Modeling and simulation will be emphasized.

Firstly, classic theory for phase coarsening like Lisfshitz, Slyozov, and Wagner’ theory will briefly be discussed. Secondly, mean-field theories such as the diffusion screening theory, unified theory, and stochastic theory will be shown. Thirdly, simulation methods will be reviewed for phase coarsening, including phase-field and multiparticle diffusion methods. The advantages and limitations of modeling and simulation will be discussed in detail. Fourthly, two-dimensional phase coarsening will be briefly presented. Fifthly, phase coarsening in multicomponent systems will be mentioned. Finally, quantitative comparison among theories, simulations, and experiments including microgravity experiments, will be presented. In addition, the future direction in this field will be discussed.
